The Digital Future slid into Digital Reality a little more than a decade ago and ever since those working at local TV stations have been either living with, ignoring, complaining, working around, excited about or even lost their jobs as a result of that reality.
Newsrooms, sales teams, programming, creative services---everyone feels the impact of all of the changes.
But everyone still waits for a grand plan to emerge. All the scrambling and uncertainty will result in something-yes? If you mention Twitter on the air enough you will be perceived as modern, right? If you sell enough impressions someday you'll make as much money as you do on TV spots, maybe?
It's not about adoption of new technology. It's not about adapting to new technology. Everyone involved in broadcasting has been doing both since television was invented--how many film/tape/camera format changes have you been through in your career already? How many different systems have you had to learn, whatever your department?
What you really need to do in order to be successful in broadcasting today-irrespective of your job title-is answer three very basic questions. How you respond to those questions will determine the course of your career. Those questions will be the subject of our discussion August 9, 2010.
Jan Boyd first became interested in new media back in during the glory days of CD-ROM production in San Francisco (of course she was only in grade school at the time). She went on to produce New Media News for KRON-TV and became intrigued with the Web after roping the founders of a 6-person company called Yahoo! into regular appearances on her show.
Boyd covered the Internet boom from the beginning (well, to be honest it was actually post-Gore). She recently discovered the tape of an old interview that opened with the question, "can you explain exactly what Netscape Navigator does?"
In addition to witnessing young poorly dressed engineers become insanely wealthy and listening politely when they described the purchase of a $900,000 home (cash) furnished only with a futon until such time their mothers could fly out to help them decorate--Boyd and her team helped launch the original KRON.com and the New Media News website in 1996, complete with what later inexplicably became known as blogs.
She co-wrote a column on Silicon Valley for the San Francisco Chronicle, and along with her staff experimented with both live audio and video streaming back with video streaming---although "stream" didn't exactly describe what ended up on the screen after being scrunched through a 56k modem.
Boyd, as a member of the Chronicle Corp. Convergence Team, argued strenuously in favor of incorporating lots of video into the company's new website, SFGate.com-and later, determined to prove the viability of video on the Web she launched a broadband video production studio. It's genesis synced perfectly with the Valley's dot.com demise in 2001.
Later Boyd moved to KNTV and as Executive Producer, New Media, integrated live chat into the 5pm newscast (a first), utilized webcasting and even SMS texting-viewers could questions via their cell phones and be answered live on-air (also a local news first). She further demonstrated the power of web & television integration by creating documentary companion websites. She also produced a half dozen series of original podcasts shortly after the launch of iTunes.
Boyd joined Belo's San Antonio station, KENS 5, 18 months ago. As the station's Director of Digital Media Boyd built the station's first website after a 10-year partnership with the local Hearst paper. She's incorporated and expanded on all of the programs launched in her prior roles and threw social media into the mix.
In addition Boyd has created a unique cost-effective & high-quality digital advertising production process and works closely with the station's sales team. The website, www.Kens5.com exceeded revenue projections blew through the traffic projections during its first year and is on track to do the same in 2010.
